We Can Even Make A Garbage Can Cute

We have a small, soon to be adorable bathroom. Finding a small wastepaper basket was key. Off to the dollar store! There we found a basic, small, flimsy, white garbage can. Well that just wouldn't do in our apartment, far too plain for us. Thanks to Pinterest we love the idea of nautical touches in the bathroom. One of the first things we thought of was thick rope. Well if you look for nice thick rope at a home improvement store you notice that rope is out of our frugal price range. This is why we love thrift stores. We were able to get a huge spool of about 1" diameter rope for $10. Add some time with a hot glue gun and boom this is what you get.
This was a plain dollar store trash can.
There was no lid for the trash can we bought. With a little cardboard, creative thinking, and more hot gluing we now have a perfect, cute, and cheap lid for our bathroom garbage.

Our large $10 spool of rope. Thanks Thrift shops!

Our first obstacle in this project was cutting this think of rope. Even our toughest scissors wasn't up for the job. By the second time came to cut it we smarted up and got out the small hand saw. Yes, we have power tools, but more on our tool boxes later. After cutting the rope we wrapped the ends with duct tape and covered the tip with hot glue to prevent fraying. We love our new trash can. It was a simple and easy project that took about a half hour. Time well spent in our eyes. I am considering the grand total for our nautical trash can to be two dollars. One dollar in the original basket and about a dollar in rope. Don't worry about the left over rope, there are many cute rope projects in our future, just wait and see.
